Chapter 9

Walking away from the dining room all by herself, Marlene looked lost in her thoughts.

She waited patiently for the lift to take her back to the apartment and once arrived in front of the main door, slowly but steadily she put the key into the lock, turned it and opened the door. She went straight to her bedroom, sat on the armchair and let her eyes wander around apprehensively.

“Marlon,” she said loudly, “Where are you?”

She moved her head slowly from one side to the other around the little bedroom then she resigned herself and reclined her body to reach the headrest. She remained in that position for a few minutes then she reached for the packet of cigarettes on the bedside and lit one.

“Oh, oh, Marlene! Smoking is a bad habit, why don’t you finally quit?”

A familiar voice made her come out of her vagaries. “None of your business, dear. By the way, can you explain to me why every time I needed you, you were nowhere to be found then you suddenly appear out of the blue as if you were just returning from an excursion to the pantry?”

The familiar shape of Ronald, round on the hips and stomach, came into focus, walked a few steps towards her and sat on the bed.

“Did you ever ask for my help?” he replied calmly and quietly.

“I was your wife, you never once asked me if I was all right, if there was anything I wanted, you just couldn’t care less, isn’t that true?”

“Marlene, you were so self-sufficient, always knowing what to do, what to say... You never appeared to me as if you were in need of help or protection.”

“Did you ever ask me, Ronald, if I was happy? At least content with my life, our relationship, work or anything else? Oh no, as long as the breakfast was delivered in time, the maid was not complaining about her job, the accounts were in the black you were satisfied. I was a good housekeeper, wasn’t I,” she said sadly with tears in her voice, not in her crystalline eyes.

Ronald lowered his head. “I know I have not been a perfect husband to you but I have never been a perfect man either... I do apologise if I have disappointed you...”

“Disappointed me?” Marlene almost shouted, “You did not disappoint me, as if you were a badly cooked dessert, you ruined my life, dear. You savagely destroyed my life.”

She was sobbing now without reticence.

Ronald kept his head lowered.

She went on, “Is this your second visit of the day? Already gone to Claire? By the way, be careful, she is highly impressionable and she doesn’t believe in ghosts.”

“Who do you think I am, the postman? No, I am not coming from Claire’s room.”

“Ohhhh, that’s an amazing surprise!”

He looked bewildered.

“Nothing to say, dear Ronald? Nothing to justify yourself? You shouldn’t have got married and especially to me. Oh yes, it was a good bargain for you but not at all for me. I was
